Young people are vital to society’s sustainable and prosperous development, which is why Youth Development & Poverty Alleviation is one of the priority areas in the Club’s charities strategy. At Sha Tin Racecourse in April during The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Day, which has been held since 2005 and celebrated the Club’s 140th anniversary this year, the Club announced that its Charities Trust has committed HK$1.4 billion to support five youth development projects. They include two strategic collaborations with the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau (HYAB) that were announced in the Chief Executive’s 2024 Policy Address. One of the initiatives is the HYAB JC Scheme for Youth Life Planning, launched by the HYAB and the Youth Development Commission, which aims to assist secondary school students in realising life planning and seizing national development opportunities.

The other involves conversion of part of Chai Wan’s Youth Square into a new interactive space where young people can gather, exchange ideas, develop their potential and participate in a variety of activities. The HYAB will also roll out the “Good Stories of Hong Kong” Programme by setting up a video studio and offering training for young people to produce their own positive stories of Hong Kong youth. The other three initiatives announced during Community Day include a JC Campsite Reimagination Project, which will redevelop Hong Kong’s recreational campsites, originally built between the 1960s and 1980s, to meet modern needs – reinforcing the positive benefits of outdoor learning and helping to improve young people’s physical and mental well-being.

Meanwhile, the Enhancing Life Mobility Potential of Youth project provides an innovative multi-stage intervention model to help young people develop their sense of agency, and enhance the social mobility of young graduates entering the workforce. Finally, the JC Echoes of Love Fund, established and funded by the Trust and operated by the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, is a project that offers a positive trajectory framework and support services for bereaved children and young people under the age of 18 impacted by the loss of a parent.
