Training
Connect with your trainer to discuss racing strategies and trackwork, alongside managing stable transfers

Owners must complete an "Authority to Act Form" to authorise a trainer:
Authority to Act Form

Appoint a Trainer
  • to enter their horses to run in races,
  • to withdraw their horses from races,
  • to declare their horses to start, and
  • to engage jockeys to ride their horses in races

General responsibilities of a Trainer

Each trainer shall:

  • Conduct his business properly and with due regard to the interest of his owners and is responsible for the good management and training of horses in his charge;
  • Be responsible for all matters pertaining to the running of his stable including stable routine, the well-being and proper feeding and care of the horses in his care, security inside the stable and the work of the stable staff allocated to him;
  • Conduct his business and fulfill his responsibilities in compliance with all directions of his owners and of the Club;
  • As soon as practicable report to a Veterinary Surgeon of the Club any abnormalities, injuries, or sickness to any horse under his care.
Trackwork
  • Trainers must work their horses, which have been declared to start in a race, publicly on the training track (namely, grass tracks, all weather tracks, trotting rings or bridle path) within 7 days prior to its engagement.
  • Owners can watch their horses at the Trainers' Stand during morning Trackwork, Barrier Trials and Stalls Tests. However, Owners must wear their owner badges and obtain visitor badges for accompanying guests from the security post at the track entrance gate.

    Monday - Sunday
    4:45am - 8:45am

Stable Transfer

Owners have the right to transfer their horses from one stable to another at any time (subject to the approval of Chief Stipendiary Steward) by completing a "Request for Stable Transfer form".

Entries
Horses must first be "entered" in order to run in a race. Trainers will submit entries before the closing time according to the race conditions for each race meeting.
Entries will normally close at:
Meeting Entries Closing Time
Saturday / Sunday 10:00am on Monday
Wednesday 10:00am on Thursday

In the event that races are re-opened due to insufficient entries, entries for these races will normally close at 11:30 am on the same day.

Declarations
Trainers are required to declare their horses to run, with details of riders and horse gears, at the prescribed time for each race meeting.

Declarations will normally close at:

Meeting Declarations Closing Time
Saturday / Sunday 8:00am on Thursday
Wednesday 8:00am on Monday

Once a horse has been declared, it cannot be withdrawn unless with the approval of Stipendiary Stewards or on veterinary grounds.

Barrier Draw process

Barrier Draw process is one of the major processes in Declarations, which lasts for approximately 10 minutes on every Declarations morning. Owners are most welcome to participate and witness this process which takes place at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Headquarters. For enquires, please contact Racing Registry at 2966 8349.

Racing
Owners are most welcome to experience the excitement of horse racing at the Owner Facilities which provide a luxurious environment with spectacular views of the excellent racing.

Owners can also join the crowd at the Members' Forecourt to view the races, the winning owners can take photos at the Winning Enclosure with their horse, trainer, jockey and guests.

Racing Overseas
In addition to racing in Hong Kong, Owners may compete their horses in prestigious races overseas. The success of Hong Kong horses in overseas ventures reflects great credit on Hong Kong and Hong Kong racing.

An Owner who wishes to campaign a horse outside Hong Kong must make an application via their nominated trainer to Racing Registry for approval. The Club will usually look favorably on the application if the horse is to contest in a Group race which is considered to be of sufficient value or prestige. Dual Site Stables Operations Department will work with the trainer in submitting entries, declarations and horse shipment logistics.

Owners shall be responsible for all the expenses for their horses’ overseas trip which are not covered by the hosting country, including but not limited to the following items:

  • Accommodation, meal and travelling expenses of the Trainer, Jockey, accompanying Veterinary Surgeon, professional groom and stable staff
  • Declarations fee and other registration fees levied by the hosting country
  • The usual livery charges in Hong Kong

Under the current policy of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, any prize money won by a horse(s) when racing overseas shall be distributed in such a way that the Trainer, Jockey and Stable Staff will receive no less than their normal entitlement under the Rules of Racing in Hong Kong, i.e.

In the event that the prize money entitlement under the Rules of Racing in the hosting country for the Trainer, Jockey and Stable Staff is higher than their entitlement in Hong Kong, the Owners have to top up the difference out of their share of prize money.

Transfer of Ownership / Change of Racing Name

Transfer of shares to spouse and children
  • An Owner may transfer up to 50% of his or her shares in a horse to his or her spouse, who must be a Club Member, without restriction by application to the Racing Registry.
  • An Owner may apply to the Club to transfer up to 50% of his or her shares in a horse to his/her children, who must be Full or Racing Members in their own right; provided that there will not be more than four (4) partners as a result.
 
Change of Racing Name - Racing a horse in joint name with one's spouse & children
  • An Owner may race a horse in partnership with his or her spouse without the spouse necessarily being a Club Member but in such cases the spouse will not be entitled to any share of the horse and will not be considered as an Owner.
  • An Owner may race a horse jointly with his children who are Racing Club Members but in such cases the children will not be entitled to any share of the horse and will not be considered as owners.

Retire Your Horse

Owners can submit Retirement Form to the Club to retire their horses from racing.

Owners can retire their horse voluntarily.

Compulsory Retirement

Compulsory retirement criteria are determined by the Stewards of the Jockey Club. The current criteria are as follows:

  • All horses which have reached the age of 11 years.
  • All horses rated 25 or below at the end of each racing season.
  • All horses whose veterinary histories indicate that, in the opinion of the Veterinary Officer, they are no longer sound and/or safe racing propositions. This includes horses with one eye or blind of an eye, horses that have been reported to have bled from one or both nostrils on two occasions and horses that have been reported on three occasions to have had an irregular heart rhythm.
  • All horses foaled in the Southern Hemisphere which will be an 8-year old at the season end and any horse foaled in the Northern Hemisphere which will be a 9-year old at the season end will be required to have a full veterinary examination to determine its suitability to remain in training for the coming season.
  • All horses which has not raced 12 months or more will be required to pass an official barrier trial and official veterinary examination before it is entered for a race. Unless otherwise permitted by the Stipendiary Stewards in exceptional circumstances, the official barrier trial and official veterinary examination must be conducted jointly as part of the same process.
  • Any horse which is unruly and which, in the Stewards’ opinion, is unsafe to continue to race.
Retirement Life

All retired horses, except those being exported by their original owners, will be inspected by the Club's veterinary surgeons who will assess their suitability for different retirement options including:

  • transfer to Beas River Country Club / riding schools for leisure riding;
  • re-train as a Lead Horse;
  • donate to organizations in Mainland China or overseas for equestrian or training purposes

Owners can export their retired horses to overseas for retirement, equestrian or breeding purposes. The flow chart below illustrates the activities involved in arranging the exportation of a horse overseas.

There are three kinds of Replacement Permits:

  • Others (for importing a PP with 70+ HK rating)
Pre-conditions
  • Original horse was NOT imported under a Normal or Special Replacement Permit;
  • Retired within 24 months of arrival in Hong Kong; and
  • Did not have more than 15 starts in HKJC races
  • Original horse was retired within 24 months of arrival in Hong Kong; and
  • Did not have more than 10 starts in HKJC races

Example: If the original horse was imported under a PPG permit, a Replacement permit for importing a PPG will be granted.
Original horse must be exported at Owner's cost, unless the horse is certified not suitable for export by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon
Applications must be submitted to the Racing Registry within 2 weeks after the retirement of the original horses

** The Stewards have revised the replacement permit policy whereby Owners of a horse which was imported under a normal permit from the annual Horse Ballot may apply for a maximum of two consecutive replacement permits from this normal import.

The Stewards have also decided that Owners of any replacement horses that are currently in training may apply for a further and final replacement permit upon retirement, regardless of the aforementioned quota limit; and that the same policy will be applicable to all replacement horses yet to be imported under an outstanding replacement permit issued on or before 30 June 2014.

The above changes will become effective from 1 July 2014.
